Tampa is relatively safe for a large city. Home to 400,000 people, the city has a crime rate 7% below the national average, although the violent crime rate is 34% higher than the U.S. average. According to one study, Tampa is the 8th safest place to live in Florida among the 60 largest cities.
In 2022, there were 497 violent crimes per 100,000 people and a homicide rate of 11 per 100,000 people. Hillsborough County had a violent crime rate of 1,400 per 100,000, nearly three times higher than Tampa.
If you’re concerned about crime, you’ll find many safe places to live in the city. Here are some of the safest neighborhoods in Tampa, Florida, to consider.
Hunters Green
Home to about 6,000 people, Hunters Green has the honor of being the safest neighborhood in Tampa. The community has 90% less crime than the city of Tampa, with only 211 crimes per 100,000 people.
Hunters Green is a gated community in the New Tampa area. The gates are manned 24/7, contributing to the neighborhood’s very low crime rate. The Hunters Green Community Association governs the community, which is home to the Hunter’s Green Country Club and across from the Flatwoods Nature Center.
Palma Ceia
Palma Ceia has about 5,000 residents. There are 540 crimes per 100,000 people here, which is 75% lower than in Tampa. This South Tampa neighborhood is just southwest of downtown Tampa on Hillsborough Bay. It’s adjacent to the Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club.
Tampa Palms
This large neighborhood of 15,000 people is one of the safest places in Tampa. The crime rate is 81% lower than in Tampa, with 412 crimes per 100,000 residents.
Tampa Palms is a master-planned community in the New Tampa district. It was named America’s top master-planned community in 1987. The community was designed with wide roads and the 120-foot-wide Tampa Palms Boulevard. The goal was to give residents access to dining, shops, and schools without leaving the community.
West Meadows
West Meadows is a large community of about 12,000 people. There is 72% less crime than the city overall, with 605 crimes per 100,000 residents.
The master-planned community is located in the New Tampa district northeast of the University of South Florida. It’s comprised of 12 villages or communities, each with unique architecture and amenities. Some villages are gated, for instance, and some are single-family homes while others are townhomes. West Meadows is managed by the West Meadows Property Owners Association.
Bayshore Beautiful
Bayshore Beautiful has around 7,000 residents. The crime rate is about the same as West Meadows, with 608 crimes per 100,000 people.
Bayshore Beautiful is served by the Bayshore Beautiful Neighborhood Association (BBNA), a volunteer-run organization that plays a vital role in maintaining the neighborhood’s low crime rate.
Through donations by residents, the association funds police patrols by off-duty officers. The officers work in three-hour shifts at $43 an hour. Based on availability, an officer patrols Bayshore Beautiful between 10 pm and 3 am. BBNA is also forming a neighborhood watch to protect the community further.
Virginia Park
The Virginia Park neighborhood is home to 6,000 people. The crime rate is 79% lower than in Tampa, with 465 total crimes per 100,000 people. The neighborhood is surrounded by two bays in South Tampa and is known for its great schools and many parks.
