What Florida Cities Have the Most Car Accidents?
September 13, 2024 | Winters & Yonker Personal Injury Lawyers | Car Accident
According to recent crash data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), some regions suffer significantly more car accidents than others. As you might expect, these numbers coincide with the larger populations of major cities. In which Florida cities are you more likely to be involved in fender benders like rear-end crashes and more significant accidents?
Miami-Dade County
The Miami metropolitan area boasts a population of over six million. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Miami-Dade County has the greatest number of crashes in the state at around 60,000 per year, on average. This statistic includes about 27,000 injuries and over 300 fatalities annually.
Miami is a prime tourist destination, hosting roughly six million additional visitors each year, including millions of international travelers who may not be familiar with the rules of the road in the United States. Accordingly, traffic conditions can be understandably challenging.
Broward County
Located just north of Miami-Dade, Broward County boasts several sizable beach towns of over 100,000 residents, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach, that also draw tourist crowds.
This heavy traffic is likely one contributing factor putting this county in the number two spot for car accidents. It experiences nearly 40,000 crashes each year, on average, including almost 22,000 injuries and 300 fatalities.
Hillsborough County
Entertainment, pristine beaches, and amusement parks are a major draw for Tampa, the largest city in Hillsborough County, with a population of over 400,000.
This county comes in at number three for accidents in the state, with nearly 27,000 per year accounting for over 18,000 injuries and 200 fatalities. A recent study using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ranked Tampa at number 10 among the nation’s worst cities for drivers.
Orange County
Orlando may only have a population of a little over 300,000, but this Florida city draws impressive crowds, with an estimated 74 million visitors each year. This high rate of tourism is mainly thanks to the abundance of theme parks.
Disney alone offers the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, the Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and two water parks. Then there’s Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and several more — well over a dozen total.
Unsurprisingly, the massive influx of visitors can cause some traffic headaches, including over 25,000 car accidents each year, resulting in over 20,000 injuries and just shy of 200 fatalities.
Palm Beach County
Palm Beach County is home to West Palm Beach, with a population of over 120,000, and Boca Raton, with nearly 100,000 residents. With almost 24,000 auto accidents per year, on average, including over 14,000 injuries and 200 fatalities, Palm Beach County ranks at number five for collisions.
Duval County
Duval County, where the Jacksonville metro area (Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, and other communities) boasts over 1.6 million residents, comes in just behind Palm Beach County. The county experiences over 23,000 accidents yearly, which are responsible for over 14,000 injuries and nearly 200 fatalities.
Seek Help After a Florida Car Accident
Many things may contribute to car crashes, but impairment due to drug and alcohol use is among the most common factors in fatal collisions. An average of nearly 5,000 DUI accidents occur each year, resulting in over 400 deaths.
By comparison, about 300 deaths each year are caused by distracted driving. If you’re seriously injured in an accident in Florida, the best thing to do is seek immediate medical attention and contact an experienced attorney.
