Tampa Police works on investigation of the death of a jogger who was hit by a DUI driver. The accident occurred on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, around 11 a.m. on Thursday.
The driver of a Pinch A Penny truck was identified as thirty-one-year-old Benjamin Ehas. His BAC test showed 0.234. He was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.
Tampa Police informed that two people jumped over the barrier to pull an adult man out of the water. Later the Fire Rescue arrived on the scene.
One of the witnesses, Christopher Martinez, said the truck drove erratically before hitting the Bayshore sidewalk wall and the jogger. The witness reported that he tried to rescue the jogger who was knocked into the water.
The driver was injured on the ground when Martinez stopped to help him. Then someone shouted that there is a body in the water. He jumped in the water and lifted the jogger’s head out. The man was severely injured.
Two other people jumped in to help. They were keeping the man’s head out of the water and were checking his pulse. But, there was no sign of it. The water was not deep, and there were no steps anywhere near to pull the body out of the water, so they leaned the jogger against the sea wall and waited for the Fire Rescue crew.
When the help arrived, firefighters had to use ladders and a basket to elevate the man out of the bay. He was transported to the hospital, where he died from severe injuries.
If a drunk driver causes someone severe injuries or even death, they will be charged with a 3rd-degree felony in Tampa, Florida.
